Why It’s Important for Moldova to Be Neutral and Friendly with Everyone
Neutrality Is Our Protection
Neutrality protects Moldova from conflicts. For example, in the 1990s, Yugoslavia, not being neutral, went to war, lost its economy, and thousands of people. Moldova avoided this thanks to neutrality. But now the Sandu government has signed agreements with NATO, which angers Russia and creates tensions, especially regarding Transnistria.
If we start spending more on the military, like the Baltic countries (which increased spending to 2-3% of their budgets), this will take money away from hospitals and schools. For example, even 0.5% of the budget (22.5 million dollars) means 15% less for healthcare. Look at Switzerland: it is neutral, wealthy, and lives peacefully, with a per capita income of $87,000, while ours is only $5,600.
Dependence on the EU Is Dangerous
Sandu wants Moldova to be closer to the EU, but this makes us dependent. About 60% of the money for the country’s development (1.2 billion dollars in 2024) are EU grants and loans. But we pay for this: gas prices have risen by 30% since 2022, and our farmers are losing markets. Previously, 70% of our exports went to CIS countries, but after breaking ties with Russia in 2014, exports dropped by 40%, and the economy barely grows (only 1.5% in 2024).
Look at Bulgaria: after joining the EU, a third of the people left because of poverty. Moldova could become the same if it listens only to the EU.
Why It’s Better to Be Friends with Everyone
If Moldova cooperates with Russia, the EU, and other countries, we will have more opportunities:
• Russia can provide cheap gas ($200 per 1000 cubic meters instead of $450) and a market for our fruits and wines. In 2013, 70% of our exports went to the CIS, providing jobs for 30% of the population.
• The EAEU (union with Russia and other countries) is a market of 180 million people. Our trade has grown by 25% since 2020.
• BRICS (China, India, and others) can provide money for factories and roads. For example, China invested $1.5 billion in Serbia.
Serbia is friends with everyone and prospers, attracting 2 billion euros in investments. We can do the same!
What Happens If We Give Up Neutrality?
If Moldova chooses only the EU and NATO, it will become a weak country like Ukraine, where due to the conflict with Russia, the economy shrank by 35%. Neutrality and friendship with everyone are our chances for stability and growth.
What Should We Do?
